Industrial Design

Team Project. Designed a retractable and portable printer for the NHS so that GPs can print both at the office and during home consultations.

The aim of this project was to design and engineer a battery powered hand-held printer for GPs to use both at the office and during home consultations. The NHS has introduced the Electronic Prescription Service (EPS) to reduce the need for most paper prescriptions. Problems: 1) the elderly or disabled people are disadvantaged, 2) mobile users and rural areas are excluded, and 3) digital prescriptions lead to mistakes in drug regime. 3,029 million items are prescribed in the UK every day and 30% of these can't use the EPS.

How might we include users who need paper prescriptions in the new NHS digital service? Since classic desk printers will tend to disappear from consultation rooms, the solution is to implement a small portable, hand-held printer allowing cheap, fast casual prescription printing in consultation rooms as well as in home consultations (increased due to Covid-19). We have designed a retractable printer which extends from A5 to A4 by pushing two side buttons. Full report available upon request. Link to complete video below.
